SPEAKER: Christian Steinruecken TITLE: On Formal and Natural Languages ABSTRACT: This seminar will discuss various different forms of languages and their properties. With a variety of examples ranging from chip design to molecular biology, the concept of language hierarchies will be introduced and formalised. The notion of meaning spaces will be used to compare natural and formal languages, both in applied and theoretical contexts. Central to the seminar will be an argument showing that the expressivity of all languages is necessarily and logically limited, and what consequences this has for humans and machines.
